NEW Information !

FRETAC CQI
Improving Patient Care!

The FRETAC board is dedicated to improving the EMTS system.
One of the ways we hope  to accomplish this is through a
FRETAC-wide CQI program.

At this point in the trauma system evolution, there is not yet a statewide
CQI system in place, so the RETACs have been unable to address
this goal completely.

Until such time as a state-wide system is introduced, the FRETAC
partnered with 5 other RETACs in the state in a
very small foray
into CQI. We are addressing EMS trip reports, or (PCRs). This issue
involves both facilities and EMS, and we hope it will be a first step
in a learning process.

Our first step was to meet with our EMS and facility Medical Directors.
We listened to what they had to say, and planned the next
steps accordingly.

This project is now in the 3rd year since its inception with three distinct
phases of the project Our goal was to improve compliance with the number
of PCRs received at the facilities when a patient is delivered via EMS.

The Clinical Care Committee is currently putting the final finishing
touches to the research paper. The paper will then be sent to EMS
journals for possible publication!

We're very excited about this new adventure. The committee has now
developed a "short form" that we call the PPCR
or "
Preliminary Patient Care Record". You can now download
the form and the
guidelines that go with it. The form is not copyright
protected and can be modified to fit any agency. We only ask that you
consider using at least these data points when using the new form.

For more information on this project please contact
the
RETAC Coordinator.
Stay tuned to our RETAC Listserve for Meeting dates and times.

Please join us in this great project!

Medical Direction:

The Medical Directors (Physician Advisors) for our participating EMS
agencies and facilities are a vital part to the decision making processes
within the Foothills RETAC.

We encourage their participation and involvement in all of the
FRETAC activities from patient destinations to facility issues.

The FRETAC board has met with our Medical Directors several times
since our inception at special meetings. We continue to partner with
these individuals that donate their time and efforts to enhance patient
care.

We invite all interested Medical Directors to join any and all of our
RETAC meetings. Your participation is much appreciated.

Trauma Triage Algorithms:

The basic premise of getting the "right patient to the right place at the right time" was the
foundation for the building blocks that make up Colorado's Trauma System.

With this concept, Colorado's 11 RETACs are charged with using the State's  approved "Trauma
Triage Algorithm", and applying it to our regions. The trauma patient's destination is a vital link in the
EMTS system.

The Foothills RETAC board carefully considered many factors when designing our policies.
Geographical differences, medical facility availability and capabilities, specific EMS capabilities, and
Medical Direction preference within our RETAC were all considered. The FRETAC decided to design
county specific algorithms that would be EMS friendly for quick reference and understanding,
ALWAYS keeping in mind what is best for the trauma patient.

Our Trauma Triage Algorithms have undergone minor changes over the last year. The latest change
was related to the inclusion of our new facility within  Boulder County. We are an INCLUSIVE system
and RETAC, and encourage participation from all our facilities and prehospital agencies.
